I heard a lot about Concepts, Techniques, and Models of Computer Programming but I have not read it yet. It turns out there's a 30-page paper by one of its authors which crams most of the book into a high-level overview. I was instantly fascinated when I started reading it. It's short enough to read while commuting and it puts into perspective most major languages and concepts and paradigms they implement.
